{"id":486,"date":"2017-12-29T21:15:07","date_gmt":"2017-12-29T21:15:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mattersgraph.com\/?post_type=insight&#038;p=486"},"modified":"2026-04-09T01:28:12","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T01:28:12","slug":"indefensible-competitive-position","status":"publish","type":"insight","link":"https:\/\/mattersgraph.com\/ja\/insights\/indefensible-competitive-position\/","title":{"rendered":"008: Indefensible (Competitive Position)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div  class=\"theme-block wp-block-group is-style-pull-left is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\" ><p  class=\"appear-on-scroll is-style-intro wp-block-paragraph\" >I\u2019m fairly certain that just about every commercial diligence assignment conducted is going to include measurement of the asset&#8217;s commercial strength relative to customer needs and expectations, and relative to perceptions of competitors and alternatives.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-paragraph\">But there is a significant difference between measuring how an asset is currently performing, and truly understanding what underlies its prospect for continued, or improved, out-performance.<\/p><\/div>\n\n<hr  class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-paragraph\">To that end, three questions are key:<\/p>\n\n<ol  class=\"appear-on-scroll-children wp-block-list\" >\n<li>\u201cWhat defensible advantage(s) does the company hold?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What enables the company to uniquely hold onto this advantage (so as new owners you can help protect it)?&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWhen these elements are stacked up, how formidable is the overall advantage?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-paragraph\">These are obvious questions that you would expect your diligence to answer.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-paragraph\">But sadly, I\u2019ve noticed over the past 10 years that focus on these three questions has declined in direct proportion to increased interest in growth assets and playing in growth markets &#8211; and it should not have. In our experience, there is a vast difference between taking a cursory look at these topics (while also addressing the long list of other items on the diligence agenda), and really pushing hard against these issues and the associated strategic analysis.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-paragraph\">These are honestly tough questions to answer definitively \u2013 some of the hardest. The answer is always nuanced, and often more so qualitative than quantitative. But getting at this issue sooner rather than later can provide you with a valid and true \u201creason to believe\u201d in the wisdom and skillset of management and\/or in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mattersgraph.com\/ja\/services\/value-development\/\">value development plan.<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"appear-on-scroll wp-block-paragraph\">Understanding the defensible competitive advantage can make you a wiser and more effective owner. The ultimate answers will say a lot about exit multiples and contribution to earnings, and they can inform your value creation plan in important and distinctive forms.
